North Fork wine tours have never been more popular. Winemaking on Long Island’s North Fork has evolved significantly since its humble beginnings in the 1970s. Next year marks the 40th anniversary of the North Fork’s official establishment as an American Viticultural Area (AVA).
There are more than 40 North Fork wineries spread across approximately 3,000 acres of vineyards. Whether you are an experienced wine connoisseur or an absolute beginner, there is so much to explore and hard to decide where to start. Here, we will take a look at some of the most popular North Fork wine tours.
Lenz Winery
Long Island’s wine industry is relatively new, especially when you compare it with places like the Napa Valley in California. But Lenz Winery has been around from the very beginning. Peter and Patricia Lenz established their vineyard at the former Kruspi farm in 1977 and set up a tasting room in one of the old farm buildings. That setup has mainly remained unchanged to this day, and what the barn lacks in home comforts, it more than makes up for in atmosphere.
Lenz focuses on low-intervention winemaking. They use natural processes and minimize the use of additives and artificial techniques. Their grapes are hand-harvested, sorted, and fermented in small batches. Reds are typically aged for four to five years before release, with some vintages dating back decades. Lenz welcomes visitors throughout the year. It’s where wine production started on the North Fork, so where better to start your North Fork wine tour? You are welcomed to bring your well-behaved dog.
Bedell Cellars
Founded in 1980 by US winemaking legend Kip Bedell, Bedell Cellars is another of the North Fork’s winemaking pioneers. This vineyard was instrumental in setting the standard for Eastern US Merlot. The wine is light in alcohol, bright in acidity, and showcases the unique flavors and aromas of the region. Kip retired in 2000 to focus on painting. However, Bedell Cellars is still a family-owned winery that adheres to his ethos of hand-crafting and sustainability.
Tasting takes place in a picturesque mahogany pavilion that overlooks the vineyards and gardens. No reservation is needed for small groups of up to 15 people. It is an easy addition to wider North Fork wine tours.
Paumanok Vineyards
The renowned Merlots of leading North Fork wineries, such as Lenz and Bedell, lead some people to assume that North Fork wine tours are all about red wine and nothing else. Paumanok Vineyard proves otherwise. Established in 1983 by Ursula and Charles Massoud, the vineyard produces some wonderful Sauvignon Blancs, Rieslings, and the region’s only Chenin Blanc.
There’s a comfortable tasting room with a traditional bar offering a light food menu. Alternatively, you can sit outside on a deck that overlooks the vineyards. Some say there is no better view on all of Long Island!
Croteaux Vineyards
Croteaux Vineyards is one of the smaller wineries on North Fork, but is a great addition to your North Fork wine tour. It is the only winery in the entire country that is dedicated exclusively to rosé wine. The small-scale production means each vintage is released at the start of the season, and it usually sells out by fall.
The tasting garden is situated among historic barns and offers a casual setting, complete with white umbrella tables and a barn lounge for warmer days. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and reservations are not accepted. Children and dogs are welcome, but large groups are not. Therefore, it is not suitable to plan on reserving one of our larger vehicles, such as a stretch limousine or a party bus.
Sparkling Pointe
Most of the wineries included on North Fork wine tours are highly traditional with old-fashioned tasting rooms. However, Sparkling Pointe
offers something quite different, both in terms of the overall experience and the wines it offers. It is the only winery on Long Island’s North Fork that exclusively dedicates itself to sparkling wine, utilizing Méthode Champenoise, the traditional sparkling winemaking technique from France’s Champagne region.
Step into the tasting room, and you will see that other cultural influences are also at play. The atmosphere is modern and distinctly Brazilian in nature, featuring colorful artwork and décor. It represents the passion of owners Tom and Cynthia Rosicki, Long Island natives who established the winery in 2002.
