Every year, the New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show has a distinct theme. In recent years, these have included the Victorian era obsession with orchids and last year it was all about florals in fashion. This year’s show is entitled Mexican Modernism. The displays showcase a fusion of traditional and contemporary artistry set among awe-inspiring displays of orchids and lush landscapes brought into vivid relief with thousands of flowers that showcase diverse ecosystems.
The settings for the bright arrangements of orchids have been inspired by the bold and colorful designs created by Luis Barragán. The Guadalajara-born modernist is recognized as the most prominent figure in modern Mexican architecture and he won the Pritzker Prize, the most prestigious award in architecture, in 1980.
Something for everyone at the New York Botanical Gardens
The organizers have gone out of their way this year to ensure that the New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show appeals as much to newcomers and younger visitors as it does to retirees and seasoned orchid experts.
For example, on select Saturday evenings, Orchid Nights will feature live music, dancing, a choice of food offerings and a cash bar. All the more reason to leave the car keys at home and use our luxury car service to get there and back home!
There are also events and activities for children, making the New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show the perfect choice for a family day out this spring. These include a Sensory Table, where children are invited to use their senses of touch, smell, sight, and sound to identify a range of botanical items. There are also a number of craft activities, interactive science experiments and games for kids throughout the show.
When to go and which orchid displays to see
Last year’s exhibition of orchid displays attracted more than 150,000 visitors. The organizers expect Mexican Modernism to be the most popular and best-attended New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show yet. With more happening than ever before, it pays to plan your visit carefully.
If you are interested in learning more about the orchids themselves, there are “meet the experts” sessions on Saturdays and Sundays throughout March and April between midday and 4PM. Here, the staff behind the collections will be on hand to explain how the orchid displays were cultivated and cared for. There are also several classes available, including Orchids for Beginners on March 22 and Botanical Wearables on March 30. The Orchid Nights live music events take place every Saturday throughout the show. Again, you’ll need to book in advance. Doors open at 7PM, but you will be given a specific entry time when you buy your tickets. Note that Orchid Nights is strictly for over-21s only.
